One of the first shots from my recent photoshoot with Christy. We were driving along a little known highway returning from a little town where I got a good deal on a dedicated flash for my new Nikon D80 when I pulled over. Relunctant at first, she let me snap a bunch of portraits. Hope you like! (Remember, I've never used an external flash before!)

well it seems you did pretty damn well for your first time with an external flash. It successfully allowed her to stand out from the background, although not as much as she could be. A more shallow depth of field in such a setting would have put more of a focus on your lovely model.
